Help for the Caregiver

Galatians 6:7 “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."

July 4th – Freedom

Our country has just celebrated another Independence Day. We all celebrated our nation’s freedoms. We are free to worship when and where we want, free to bear arms, free to vote, free to pay taxes…well maybe not so free in that instance.  As caregivers, do we have freedom? No and Yes!

No – We do not have the freedom to go on vacation anytime we want. We do not have the freedom to run to the store for the latest sales. We do not have freedom to take our children or grandchildren to see the beautiful fireworks displays after dark.

Yes We do have the opportunity to go on vacation when we plan ahead. Vacations for a caregiver take even more planning than the normal family planning. Sometimes, we have to swallow our pride and ask someone to come and stay with our family member while we are gone. It is easier to hire someone to stay with our family member because we do not have to feel obligated to other family or church family for giving us the much needed break. However, is this fair to our church family? Are we denying them the opportunity to ‘bear one another’s burdens’? Yes – we are also free to ‘ask’ for help from others for even the short trips. We need the mental break to enable us to continue our job of Caregiving with the right spirit.

Think about it, pray about it and allow the Lord to work in your heart. Celebrate HIS freedom for you!
